Have you ever noticed that you feel happier and more relaxed after you eat bread, pasta or fruit? Do you find

that you are more energetic and awake after eating yogurt or beans? These things are not accidents. Food affects how

we feel more than we may think. Scientists researching food and its effect on our moods are beginning to understand

that we can influence our feelings with what we eat. There are chemicals in our brains that control our moods. One of the most basic of these is serotonin (血清素) ,

one of the most commonly recognized. When serotonin levels increase, we feel more relaxed and happy; when the

levels decrease, we feel unhappier. Proteins (蛋白质) found in nuts, vegetables, tofu and some milk products contain a chemical that makes us feel

more awake and energetic. Another chemical that can easily affect our mood is caffeine (咖啡因). Caffeine, which is found in coffee,

chocolate and many types of tea, is perhaps the worst thing you can have when you are feeling stressed. Yet coffee or

chocolate are often the first things people think of eating when they are under pressure. Caffeine and sugar can

reduce your blood sugar level, which changes your brain chemistry and vitamin levels, making you feel even more

stressed.

Of course, enjoying a nice meal with friends, whatever we eat, can also affect how you feel. It is important not

to worry about eating the right foods to control your mood. Most importantly, though, remember the old rule: try to

eat different foods, and do not eat too much!

58. Which of the following can’t make you more energetic?

A. yogurt

B. beans

C. sugar

D. nuts

59. How many types of chemicals controlling moods are mentioned in the passage?

A. Two

B. Three

C. Four

D. Five

60. What can we infer from the last paragraph?

A. Being with friends also plays a big role in feeling happy.

B. When you feel stressed, you can eat too much food.

C. We are supposed to eat healthy food to keep a slim figure.

D. You have to pay attention to what you eat to change your mood.

Recent months have seen a revival of the bike across China, with an increasing number of people choosing

cycling instead of driving to schools, to workplaces or to do sightseeing. The introduction of bike-sharing systems

has brought the trend (趋势) to a new level.

Many cities in China have government-run bike-rental programs, but Mobike and Ofo have made things so

much easier as users can borrow and return bikes, which are equipped with GPS systems, with just a smart phone. No

complicated (复杂的) procedure, such as going to a specific place to pay a deposit (定金), is required.

“Right now, we are transporting more people than taxis in China in many cities,” Mobike CEO Davis Wang said

recently at Fortune’s Brainstorm Tech conference. “And in some cities, for example in Chengdu, we are transporting

more people than the subway (地铁). So Mobike is becoming one of the major transportation means in many of the

cities in which we operate.”

Davis Wang also added that bike sharing allows users to park their bikes anywhere they want, unlike previous

city-bikes where riders had to look for a certain place to return the bikes. The ability to use a bike whenever and

wherever without having to worry about losing the bike offers great convenience.

It’s very convenient to use the bikes if you have a smart phone . First, you have to download

such an APP on your smart phone. Then what you need to do is to find a nearest bike through the APP, scan (扫描)

the QR code(二维码) on the bike or connect your phone with the bike over a Bluetooth wireless connection. You

will find the bike can be unlocked itself. Then you can enjoy your trip.

However, with the development of bike sharing, some problems occurred, such as illegal parking, vandalism

(故意破坏)and theft.

“Bike-sharing is a greener method of transportation,” said Liu Xiaoming, vice-minister of transport. “But it’s a

combination of online and offline business. Operators are usually strong in online services, but lack offline business

experience, which causes problems.”

61. The underlined word “revival” in paragraph 1 means ______.

A. disappearance

B. survival

C. recovery

D. existence

62. Which of the following wasn’t mentioned by Davis Wang?

A. Users do not need to pay a deposit.

B. Users needn’t worry about losing the bikes.

C. Users can park the bikes wherever they want.

D. Users needn’t return the bikes to a certain place.

63. Which is the right order of using a shared bike?

① find a nearest bike through the APP

② download an APP on your smart phone

③ unlock the bike and enjoy your trip

④ scan the QR code on the bike

A. ① ② ④ ③

B. ① ② ③ ④

C. ② ① ④ ③

D. ② ③ ① ④

64. According to the last paragraph, the problem of bike sharing results from ______.

A. the bad behavior of some people

B. lacking offline business experience

C. the bad competition between companies

D. lacking enough public parking space

D

Passing through the Atlanta airport one morning, I caught one of those trains that take travelers from the main

terminal (航站楼)to their boarding gates. Free, the trains run back and forth all day long. Not many people

considered them fun, but on this Saturday I heard laughter.

At the front of the first car — looking out of the window at the track that lay ahead — were a man and his son.

We had just stopped to let off passengers, and the doors were closing again. “Here we go! Hold on to me tight!”

the father said. The boy, about five years old, made sounds of pure delight.

“Look out there!” the father said to his son. “See that pilot? I bet he’s walking to his plane.” The son stretched

his neck to look.

As I got off, I remembered something I’d wanted to buy in the terminal. I was early for my flight, so I decided

to go back.

I did, and just as I was about to get on the train for my gate, I saw that the man and his son had returned too. I

realized then that they hadn’t been heading for a flight, but had just been riding the shuttle (短程班车).

“You want to go home now?” the father asked.

“I want to ride some more!”

“More?” the father said, sounding annoyed but actually pleased. “You’re not tired?”

“This is fun!” his son said.

“All right,” the father replied, and when a door opened we all got on.

“Where are all these people going, Daddy?” the son asked.

“All over the world,” came the reply.

There are parents who can afford to send their children to Europe or Disneyland, and the children turn out rotten

(堕落的). There are parents who live in million-dollar houses and give their children cars and swimming pools, yet

something goes wrong. Here was a father who cared about spending the day with his son. The father and son, though,

were just riding this shuttle together, making it exciting, sharing each other’s company.

The answer is so simple: parents would like to spend time with their children. It doesn’t cost a cent, yet it is the

most valuable thing in the world. The train picked up speed, and the father pointed something out, and the boy

laughed again, and the answer is so simple.

65. Why did the author decide to go back?

A. He forgot something on the train.

B. He went to see the father and the son.

C. He thought that riding on a train was fun.

D. He wanted to buy something in the terminal.

66. What did the father and his son do?

A. They rode the shuttle.

B. They headed for a flight.

C. They picked up the writer.

D. They went to see the pilot.

67. Which of the following can describe the father?

A. Caring and strict.

B. Caring and friendly.

C. Friendly and impatient.

D. Optimistic and impatient.

68. According to the writer, something goes wrong because ______.

A. parents send their children to study abroad

B. parents don’t ride the shuttle with their children

C. parent don’t give their children enough care and love

D. parents give their children cars and swimming pools

69. How is the last but one paragraph mainly developed?

A. By following the order of time.

B. By giving suggestions.

C. By following the order of events.

D. By making comparisons.

70. Which is the best title for the passage?

A. A father, a son and an answer

B. A plan on a Saturday morning

C. A happy shuttle trip home

D. A problem in modern society

I’m currently living in the south of France with my husband Keith and three small children, and I feel like a fish

out of water everywhere but one place – the Saturday street market. It’s been operating in our small town of

Sommieres since the 13th century, but we’ve only lived here for three months.

From Monday to Friday, life is all about the kids. I’m busy helping my children handle life in a French school.

It’s not easy, and their stress is the whole family’s stress, as Keith and I manage the four daily school runs, lots of

homework and school notes in French.

But on Saturday, the market is for me. I feel so peaceful as I walk along the quiet street toward the busy town

square. The knife-sharpening man is there, operating a machine that looks like it dates from the Industrial Revolution.

There are street musicians with guitars and microphones, and the sound of beautiful songs fills the air. And the food, of course, is delicious. Every olive (橄榄) sold by the Middle Eastern olive store is tastier than the last. And the

cheese man doesn’t speak – he just points and cuts, offering a piece from his knife. Lines come out of the door for fresh bread at the bakery (面包店), La Maison Aux Mielles Pains. Organic vegetables, herbs, and pastries are a feast

(盛宴) for the eyes, before being tipped into the bag to be enjoyed later for lunch. The noises and smells of the

market are boring, but everything is clear to me. This is part of why I love the place so much. Unlike during the week,

when I constantly come across my own difficulties, I know how this place works.

My terrible French isn’t the barrier (*) to communication that it is in other cases. At school and in the village,

I can’t joke or join a conversation, and although the other parents at the school are kind, I’m an outsider. But at the market, I’m just another customer with a basket. Surrounded by day-trippers (一日游者), I feel like a local – greeting

people I know and petting dogs. My Saturday experiences allow me to hope that in the near future, I’ll feel equally

confident in my everyday life. Until then, Saturdays prepare me for the coming week of school runs.

One possible version: Dear Tim,
I am writing to tell you about our hiking to Nanhu Park, which lies about 20 kilometers away from our school. The hikers consisted of almost all the teachers and students of Grade One. We started off at 8:00 a.m. last Sunday from our school gate, and the whole journey took two and a half hours.
When we arrived there, we paid a visit to the park at about 11 o’clock, enjoying the beautiful scenery outdoors, which took about one and a half hours. We sang and danced together happily. We also played games. After that, we had some photos taken together to end our activities.
The hiking was very meaningful to us. Tired as we all were, it provided us with a good chance to build up our strength. In addition, we learned to live in harmony with nature. What’s more, it also promoted our communication and strengthened our friendship.
Looking forward to hearing from you soon. Yours, Li Hua

I have a test tomorrow morning, and I want to be ready for it. Text 8 W: How is your mother feeling these days? M: She is much better now and she should be back in a few days. The operation was successful and the doctors said
she would recover soon. W: That’s wonderful. When will you be back on our job? M: I think I need at least a week to take care of her and do some cleaning. W: Why don’t you hire someone to do it? In which case, you can not only do your job, but also have more free time. M: Yes, but I’m really worried about my mother. She is 72 years old. W: You are a thoughtful person. Please take good care of her. All of us in our office welcome you back and wish your

mother a speedy recovery. M: Thank you, Mary. You are really kind. Text 9 M: You like living in the city, don’t you? W: Oh, I love it. It’s so convenient. I can take the bus to work, or the subway, or the taxi. And there is so much to do. M: I know what you mean. I’d like to live in the city, too, but to live in the suburbs is better for children. W: Well, there are a lot of good things about suburban living. But, as a working woman, I think a city has all the
conveniences – including the best food and fastest news. M: But there are more trees, glass and fresh air in the suburbs. W: Yeah, but living in a city, it’s convenient to go everywhere. There are lots of cinemas, theaters and so on. You can
take them to the suburbs on weekends. M: Yeah, children are the right age. There are lots of things for them here. W: You are right. They are at the library in Brooklyn. And they come back home for lunch, then go uptown to the
Museum of Natural History. There is so much for young people to see and do. M: Not just for young people. What about me? I’ve never been to the Museum of Natural History. W: Neither have I. When I was a child, I used to go to the Museum of Art. M: I’ve been there several times. Twice with children. W: Well, I have an idea. Next weekend, we go to the Museum of Natural History. M: OK, that’s really a very nice idea. Text 10
Joe Jones was born in 1931. As a boy, he had a dream of becoming a doctor. But in 1948, when he was 17, he had to work to help to support his family. Joe worked in construction, on the railroad, and served in the army for over ten years. Then he worked in his hometown of Philadelphia for twenty years. But he still kept his dream of going back to school. In 1979, at the age of 48, Joe decided to make his dream come true. He finished high school and became a student in the Community College of Philadelphia, where he took all the math courses he could. In 1981, after a degree at the Community College, he was admitted to study computers in the University of Pennsylvania. In 1986, Joe completed his work on his master’s degree. At the age of 56, Joe was studying for his doctor’s degree. His dream was coming true.
